What is Diwali? How Diwali is Celebrated?

Happy Diwali

What is Diwali?

Diwali  or Divali also known as Deepavali and the "festival of lights", is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year.

It is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

The actual day of Diwali is traditionally celebrated on the festival's third day. The festival usually falls between the middle of October and the middle of November, although this is decided upon by the Hindu lunar calendar. While each faith has its own reason to celebrate the festival, one of the most popular stories told is the legend of Lord Rama and his wife Sita returning to their kingdom in northern India from exile after defeating the demon king Ravanna in the 15th century BC.

Celebration of Diwali

How Diwali is Celebrated?

The festival is marked by large firework displays, to remember the celebrations which, according to the legend, took place upon Rama's return as locals set off their own version of fireworks. Those celebrating the festival also light traditional earthen diyas (candles) and decorate their houses with colourful rangoli artworks - patterns created on the floor using coloured rice or powder. During Diwali, families and friends share sweets and gifts and there is also a strong belief in giving food and goods to those in need. It is also traditional for homes to be cleaned and new clothes to be worn at the time of the festival.

  Happy Diwali!

What is Islamic State (IS)?

Terrorism

Islamic State (IS) is a radical Islamist group that has seized large swathes of territory in eastern Syria and across northern and western Iraq.

Its brutal tactics - including mass killings and abductions of members of religious and ethnic minorities, as well as the beheadings of soldiers and journalists - have sparked fear and outrage across the world and prompted US military intervention.

The group aims to establish a "caliphate", a world ruled by a single political and religious leader according to Islamic law, or Sharia.

Although currently limited to Iraq and Syria, IS has promised to "break the borders" of Jordan and Lebanon and to "free Palestine". It attracts support from Muslims across the world and demands that all swear allegiance to its leader - Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim Ali al-Badri al-Samarrai, better known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The Pentagon Will Allow Illegal Immigrants to Join the US Military

The Pentagon made a surprise announcement on Thursday to let undocumented immigrants serve in the United States military.

The Department of Defense is letting undocumented immigrants apply for military service under the Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI) program, which recruits skilled foreigners, if they qualify as so-called "Dreamers": young people who entered the US illegally as children who have lived in the country for most of their lives, graduated from high school or earned a GED, and kept a clean legal record.

The Dreamers will only make the cut, however, if they successfully fill out a 127-page form that asks whether they have been terrorists, hold advanced degrees, and can speak Cebuano, Igbo, Yoruba, and a host of other rare languages. What's more, they'll be competing for only 1,500 open slots against thousands of legal immigrants with non-permanent visas who have already applied under the same criteria.

U.S. Attorney is going to Resign

Attorney General Eric Holder, a prominent member of the Obama administration since it began, will resign his post Thursday, according to multiple news reports.

The President is expected to announce the resignation this afternoon. Holder will stay on until his successor is confirmed, a White House official said.

Holder has long signaled he plans to leave the job by the end of this year, and has had several discussions with Barack Obama about his exit.

Among those mentioned as possible successors is former White House counsel Kathyrn Ruemmler, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Other candidates being considered by the White House are Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, along with Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.

The first African American attorney general, Holder is one of a few remaining cabinet members whose tenures date back to Obama's inauguration.

Human Barbie in Bikini Selfie

Human Barbie Valeria Lukyanova has experienced harsh criticism many times for allegations that she Photoshops her photos. From her doll-like appearance to her teeny tiny waist, people are quick to cry foul almost every time she posts a new pic.
After a series of YouTube videos and other live-action shots didn't satisfy the toughest critics, she's finally joined the selfie-snapping world to show that she's the real deal--because nobody Photoshops a selfie.

she posted this makeup-free bikini selfie and aside from that frame that can't possibly put her at a healthy body weight, she looks kinda cute. Much less abrasive than that whole Barbie front she puts on. Looking as pretty as she does without all of the makeup, we can't help but wonder why she feels like she has to put on such a show.

Avatar Creatures are becoming Real

Some of the most visually stunning sequences from director James Cameron's blockbuster movie "Avatar" involved graceful flying creatures that were ridden by blue human-like beings facing ecological destruction on a moon called Pandora.

It turns out that an animal very similar to those "Avatar" creatures, called Ikran, actually did exist here on Earth long ago.

Scientists on Thursday announced the discovery of fossils in China of a new species of flying reptile called a pterosaur that lived 120 millions years ago and so closely resembled the creatures from the 2009 film that they named it after them.

It is called Ikrandraci avatar, meaning "Ikran dragon" from "Avatar." And this pterosaur is noteworthy for more than just its resemblance to a movie creature.

The scientists said it appears that Ikrandraci avatar had a throat pouch similar to that of a pelican. It probably fed on small fish from freshwater lakes, flying low over the water and catching prey by skimming its lower jaw into the water, they said. It may have stored the fish in the pouch, they added.
This Cretaceous Period pterosaur boasted an unusual blade-like crest on its lower jaw like the one on the movie creatures.

Ikrandraci avatar, whose fossils were unearthed in China's Liaoning province, boasted a wingspan of about 8 feet (2.5 meters), Kellner said.

The researchers studied fossils of two specimens of Ikrandraci avatar. Pterosaurs were Earth's first flying vertebrates, with birds and bats making their appearances later. They thrived from about 220 million years ago to 65 million years ago, when they were wiped out by the asteroid that also doomed the dinosaurs.

The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

How your brain focuses on relevant objects

Ever wondered how despite the barrage of visual information on its way, the brain focuses only on important and relevant items?

A unique population of shifting neurons in the brain helps it do so, says a study. The neurons shift in sensitivity toward different colours and directions depending on what is being attended, the findings showed.

“Most of the objects in any given visual scene are not that important, so how does the brain select or attend to important ones?" said study senior author David Freedman, an associate professor of neurobiology at the University of Chicago in the US.

"We have zeroed in on an area of the brain that appears central to this process. It does this in a very flexible way, changing moment by moment depending on what is being looked for," Freedman explained.

The researchers studied the response of individual neurons during a simple task.

They looked at neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP), a region highly interconnected with brain areas involved in vision, motor control and cognitive functions.

As participant monkeys performed the task and looked for a specific combination of colour and motion, LIP neurons became highly active.

They did not respond, however, when the subjects passively viewed the same images without an accompanying task.

When the team further investigated the responses of LIP neurons, they discovered that the neurons possessed a unique characteristic.

Individual neurons shifted their sensitivity to colour and direction toward the relevant colour and motion features for that trial.

"This is the first time that neurons in the brain have been shown to shift their selectivity depending on which features are relevant to solve a task," co-researcher Guilhem Ibos from University of Chicago noted.

The study appeared in the journal Neuron.

16 Names Added to UN's Al-Qaida Sanctions List

A U.N. Security Council committee has added 16 names to its +Al-Qaida sanctions list, including one with ties to the Islamic State group.

Tuesday's additions come after the council approved a resolution expanding the list's scope to include people affiliated with the extremist group that has taken over a huge area of land in Syria and Iraq.

'Abd al-Rahman Muhammad Mustafa al-Qaduli of Iraq has been listed as a senior Islamic State group official who rejoined the group in 2012 after his release from prison. He and other individuals and entities added to the sanctions list face financial sanctions, a Travel ban and arms embargo.

The recent council resolution also urges the sanctions committee to consider listing more names of people who support the +Islamic State group.

Afghanistan's Karzai slams US

Outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday blamed the United States for his country's long war, a final swipe at the country that helped bring him to power 13 years ago but towards which he has become increasingly bitter.

His farewell speech came days ahead of the planned swearing in of a new president, Ashraf Ghani, after months of potentially violent crisis over a disputed election that ended in a power-sharing deal, yet to be tested, with rival Abdullah Abdullah.

Karzai blamed both the United States and neighboring Pakistan for the continuing war with the Taliban-led insurgency and warned the new government to be "be extra cautious in relations with the US and the West".

The conflict kills thousands of Afghans each year and has claimed the lives of more than 2,200 American and other international forces in Afghanistan.

"One of the reasons was that the Americans did not want peace because they had their own agenda and objectives," Karzai said. He did not elaborate, but in the past has suggested continued violence has been an excuse for the United States to keep bases in the country.

He also accused Pakistani power players of trying to control Afghanistan's foreign policy.

"Today, I tell you again that the war in Afghanistan is not our war, but imposed on us and we are the victims," Karzai said. "No peace will arrive unless the US or Pakistan want it."

In recent years, Karzai has sharply denounced the United States for the deaths of Afghan civilians in air strikes and for holding suspected Afghan militants prisoner without trial. The relationship deteriorated to near breaking point this year, when Karzai refused to sign a key security pact with the United States.

He said he had traveled to Pakistan, where much of the Taliban's leadership is believed to be based, at least 20 times seeking a negotiated end to the war, but his efforts were thwarted.

Neither the US nor the Pakistani embassies in Kabul had immediate comment on Karzai's speech.

Karzai has been in power since 2001 after being plucked from virtual obscurity by the United States following the overthrow of the Taliban's radical Islamist government for sheltering al Qaeda's terrorist leadership after the 9/11 attacks on the US

The deterioration of his relationship with the West was seen by some as an effort to shape his legacy as an independent leader rather than a US puppet as maintained by the Taliban.

Karzai was barred by the constitution from running for a third term this year.

Smoking linked with schizophrenia

There is a close association between schizophrenia and increased rates of tobacco smoking. The relationship between them stems, in part, from an effort by patients to use nicotine to self-medicate symptoms and cognitive impairment associated with the disease, shows a new study.

Researchers at Yale University's school of medicine found that the level of nicotine receptors in the brain was lower in schizophrenia patients than in a matched healthy group. Further, smoking, which is known to increase the levels of receptors for nicotine in the brain, had this effect in both groups, although it was blunted in schizophrenia.

However, in the schizophrenia group, the smoking-related increase in the level of nicotine receptors was associated with lower levels of social withdrawal, blunted emotional and motivational responses, as well as better cognitive function, found the study.

Nicotine mimics the actions of a natural chemical messenger, acetylcholine, which stimulates the receptors for nicotine in the brain.

"We found that lower nicotinic-acetylcholine receptor availability in smokers with schizophrenia is associated with worse negative symptoms and worse performance on tests of executive function," explained Irina Esterlis, an assistant professor at Yale University.

These findings may be relevant to the high rates of smoking in schizophrenia.

"The data seem to suggest that smoking might produce some clinical benefits for some patients by increasing the availability of receptor targets for nicotine in the brain," noted John Krystal, editor of the journal Biological Psychiatry that published the study.

"These findings suggest that nicotinic-acetycholine receptors may be a target for developing treatments for negative symptoms and cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia, for which no effective treatments exist," Krystal concluded.

World's first battery-less pacemaker in the works

In a revolutionary breakthrough for heart patients, scientists have come up with a way to power a cardiac pacemaker with an alternative energy source - the heart motion.

This new type of cardiac pacemaker is based on a commercially available, automatic wristwatch and does not require battery replacement.
"The heart seems to be a very promising energy source because its contractions are repetitive and present for 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Adrian Zurbuchen, a PhD candidate from the cardio-vascular engineering group in the University of Bern, Switzerland.

To test the watch, researchers developed an electronic circuit to transform and store the signal into a small buffer capacity. They then connected the system to a custom-made cardiac pacemaker. The system worked in three steps. First, the watch acquired energy from the heart.

Second, the energy was temporarily stored in the buffer capacity.

And finally, the buffered energy was used by the pacemaker to apply minute stimuli to the heart.
The researchers successfully tested the system in experiments with domestic pigs. The energy harvesting system has the potential to avoid both disadvantages by providing the world with a battery-less and lead-less pacemaker.

The next step is to integrate both the electronic circuit for energy storage and the custom-made pacemaker directly into the harvesting device.
"This will eliminate the need for leads," he concluded.

Zurbuchen presented the findings at the ongoing European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress, 2014 in Barcelona, Spain.

Safe Period for Safe sex

Every month a woman is in safe period that means if you mate with your woman in during that time then the chances of her getting pregnant is almost nil. I say the chances is almost nil because one has to be very careful calculating the safe period. Any miss calculation will result in fertilization. So how do we find out the perfect safe period for our women?

First, one should know the duration of the menstrual cycle, i.e. first day of the last menstrual bleeding to the first day of the present menstrual bleeding. This is the duration of the menstrual cycle. This varies from person to person and it is between 26 to 31 days. Ovulation (part of a woman's reproductive cycle in which an egg is released by a mature ovarian) approximately occurs in the middle of the cycle, i.e. duration of the cycle - (minus) 14 days (this also varies).

A week before and a week after the approximate day of ovulation is considered fertile period. The days apart from this are called the safe periods, where the fertilization does not take place.
Let us take a simple example. If a women's menstrual cycle varies from 26 days to 31 days cycle.

The shortest cycle [26days] minus 18days = 8th day.
The longest cycle [31days] minus 10days = 21st day.

Thus, 8th to 21st day of each cycle counting from first day of menstrual period is considered as fertile period. Period other than this fertile period in a menstrual cycle is considered as safe period. Any intercourse during non-safe periods will surely result in pregnancy.

Hence, it is very important to calculate the safe period very accurately. However, keep in mind, intercourse in safe period just ensures that chances of pregnancy is minimum but not zero completely.

Know your Smartphone : Display Resolution

What is Display Resolution?
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

Display Resolution is the measuring way of how much pixels does a display contain. Generally it is written as width × height (e.g.1280×720).The product of these two numbers is the actual number of pixels does a screen have. Higher number of pixel provides the ability to display more visual information (resulting in greater clarity and more detail).

Display resolution doesn’t indicate the physical size of the screen. A smaller screen could have higher resolution which could make screen more sharp and clear.

How to buy Fresh Fish

You may find the post very informative, important and even funny. Yes, it may be funny to you many but really important to many others. Specially where Fish sellers are acute businessman without humanity and sense.

In my country rotten fish selling is a common practice. To hide the rotten ones they use poisonous chemical called Formaline that is also used to preserve dead bodies.

When Formaline is used, not only fish but also any kind of food items looks fresh, even though inside the food it is totally rotten. They are very harmful to health.

So, at times of buying Fish be careful. Watch closely to its EYE. If the eye looks fresh black dark,it is at least not rotten, whether Formaline is used or not.

In the world of Mobile phone, the most rumor in the current days may be i Phone 6. Long awaited by many now has come to end.

But among all the Android and big phablets, the 4 inch Apple devices was going little behind. Even many of their loyal customers want an iPhone with larger screen.

Finally they have decided to enlarge the display a little more. iPhone 6 is going to contain a 4.7 inch IPS LCD display with Sapphire crystal glass protection which will be very hard to break or crack. It may also have the new Apple A8 chipset and iOS 8 Operating System.

Although android has almost 80% of the market, we are assuming that with this device Apple can provide a very strong comeback. There is no confirmation of the price yet. But this would definitely be among the most important facts in the market.
